About Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis a common condition when there is an ‘excessive sweating’ and can affect different areas of the body, both sexes and, all races equally. Sweating is necessary to control body temperature during times of exercise and in warm/hot surroundings and is a normal response to a rise in temperature or anxiety.

Sweating is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system. In about 1% of the population, this system is revved-up and works at a very high level, causing sweating to occur at inappropriate times, far in excess of the amount necessary to maintain normal body temperature.

The sweating doesn’t usually pose a serious threat to your health, but it can be embarrassing and distressing. It can also have a negative impact on your quality of life and may lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. Commonly affected areas include the armpits, palms of your hands, soles of your feet, face, chest, and groin area.

The patient journey

Consultation

At Hunar Clinic, we will assess your needs in an initial consultation and if you decide to proceed will work out a programme to reduce the sweating in the desired area(s). We have mainly treated armpits and other areas like palms and soles at Hunar Clinic and in your first appointment, we will smear iodine on your armpit to identify where the sweat glands are.

Treatment

Botulinum toxin (Botox®) is used to reduce sweating by injecting (using a very tiny micro-needle) a very small amount of Botox into the area which will paralyse the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. The treatment is relatively painless and will take about half an hour to complete.

Injections take 15-30 minutes, but you should allow an additional 30 minutes for the anaesthetic cream to take effect beforehand.

Treatment term typically lasts between 6 and 9 months.

Aftercare

Review appointments are available after medical treatments to assess post-treatment results. We are committed to ensuring every patient receives the highest level of care and the best possible outcomes. After your appointment, you will receive written aftercare advice to follow at home. Additionally, I can prescribe skincare products for home use that will aid healing, improve your skin, and enhance your results.

I want treatment - Can I have it?

We are happy to provide this treatment and there may be the potential for a referral for free treatment on the NHS, so make sure you discuss the options with your GP as any treatments are given at Hunar Clinic will be subject to a charge.

Are there side effects?

This will depend on the person and can sometimes lead to ‘compensatory sweating’. This is when stopping sweating in one area leads to increased sweating elsewhere- for example, the back or thighs. Although common, most patients will report high satisfaction levels in the overall outcome.

Is it painful?

At Hunar Clinic, we insist upon applying anaesthetic cream to the skin for at least 30 minutes prior to injection so the treatment is virtually pain-free.
