Lip Augmentation: Belotero vs. Juvederm

Belotero vs. Juvederm: They are two of the most popular fillers for lip augmentation, but which is the right one for you?

Lip augmentation is one cosmetic treatment that just keeps getting more popular! It seems like women of all ages are interested in plumping their lips; from more mature ladies looking to smooth out fine lines and replace volume lost with age, to younger women seeking a more pillowy pout. These days permanent silicone fillers are a thing of the past and the majority of practitioners and clients favour hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Belotero and Juvederm. However, you might be wondering about the difference between the two, and which is best to help you create the look you want? This article on Belotero vs. Juvederm should help you decide.

Lip augmentation: What’s all the fuss about?

In the past few years, lip augmentation has become far more commonplace in society. Whether it is due to the social media generation’s desire to be “selfie ready”, or the list of celebrities that have openly admitted to modifying their pout - more and more people are considering making a little tweak here and there to enhance their natural features. Furthermore, dermal fillers are a relatively easy and temporary procedure that can see you achieve visible results within 30 minutes. The rise of these so-called “lunchtime” treatments that require no downtime and boast instant results may leave you wondering, what could lip filler do for me?

As we age, our body gradually loses moisture and the skin becomes drier, thinner and thus quicker to form visible fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, our lips can be one of the first areas on our body to show signs of thinning. Hyaluronic acid lip fillers work to draw moisture back up towards the surface, plumping, defining and adding a healthy, hydrated sheen. Furthermore, those whose lips haven’t yet started showing signs of ageing can also benefit from the plumping, balancing and shaping effects. Previously, lip fillers were most popular with patients who have started to notice signs of ageing in their lips, however more recently there has been a rise in younger generations looking to add more volume to their pout as it allows them to feel more confident in their appearance.

Why does the type of lip filler matter?

In the world of injectable treatments there is a plethora of dermal filler products that are used to fill the lips, and many of them are hyaluronic acid-based. Belotero and Juvederm are two of the most popular dermal fillers, but due to both products having a similar HA base, we’d forgive you for thinking that it doesn’t matter which of the two your practitioner uses. However, when you examine the two a little more closely, it’s clear that they both offer very different results.

Although lip filler is temporary and can be dissolved, it’s important that you opt for a filler that is designed to help you achieve the specific results you want. For instance, some fillers are better at plumping, others offer more natural results, and some offer less risk of developing bumps. Keep reading to find out which filler, Belotero vs Juvederm is best for your individual needs.

Belotero vs. Juvederm: The similarities

● Both products are an injectable dermal filler with a hyaluronic acid base.

● They are both types of cosmetic filler used to rejuvenate the appearance by reducing the look of wrinkles and restoring contour to the face.

● Both products are mainly used on the face, such as on the lips, cheeks and around the eyes.

● Both products typically take 15 minutes to an hour to administer.

The similarities and differences between Belotero and Juvederm should play a big part in which you decide is best for you. The main similarity between the two is of course the hyaluronic acid base, but beyond that there are differences that will have an impact on your results…

Belotero vs. Juvederm: The differences

The key difference between the two dermal filler products is their texture, and this will have a direct impact on the results you see after treatment. Belotero has a liquid consistency, which is very effective for filling and smoothing fine lines, such as those that form on and around the lips as we get older. Juvederm, on the other hand, has a gel-like consistency, which is better suited to volumising, although Belotero can still have stunning plumping effects. Now, let’s take a closer look at each individual product...

What does Belotero do?

Belotero has a range of dermal filler formulas and two of them have been specifically designed for lip augmentation - Belotero Intense and Belotero Balance. Both products work slightly differently and address different problem areas. Belotero Intense is typically used to produce volumising and plumping results, while Belotero Balance is used to add definition and enhanced shape. The key ingredient, hyaluronic acid, works slightly differently in each product to solve different issues.

The hyaluronic acid in Belotero Intense works like a sponge beneath the surface of the lips to soak up moisture and expand into creases and sunken areas. The result is not only a plumper appearance, but heavier lines and wrinkles are filled and moisture rises to the surface to add vibrance and dewiness. The results are long-lasting and more dramatic than a lighter product like Belotero Balance.

The hyaluronic acid content in Belotero Balance works to integrate seamlessly with the skin tissue, filling in moderate to severe vertical lines, fine lines above and around the mouth and also laugh lines. Balance is a lighter and softer filler compared to Intense, and the results are more subtle as a result.

What does Juvederm do?

Juvederm, like Belotero, has a wide range of dermal fillers and two of them have been designed exclusively for lip augmentation. Juvederm Ultra XC is the filling agent most commonly used for plumping lips, whereas Juvederm Volbella is designed to fill fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm filling agents are formulated with an advanced technology known as Vycross that cross-links hyaluronic molecules to give a more structured consistency, which is why it’s so popular for volumising and plumping the lips.

Juvederm Ultra XC has been specifically designed for the delicate skin tissue of the lips, meaning it provides a fuller pout without feeling heavy. Similar to Belotero Intense, this filler is better suited to patients wanting to boost the size and plumpness of their lips. Juvederm Volbella is a slightly smoother formula, making it best suited to add definition and hydration to the lips, and fill finer lines and creases.

How to choose the best filler for you

It’s all well and good knowing what each filling agent does, but you may still be wondering whether Belotero or Juvederm is the right choice to help achieve your desired results. To narrow down the best option, we’d recommend considering these three points:

1) If you want to enhance the shape of your pout, add more definition to the outline, or make your lips more prominent - you might benefit more from a filling agent that has a softer texture, such as Belotero Balance or Juvederm Volbella.

2) If you’re concerned about visible signs of ageing appearing on or around your lips, softer fillers such as Balance and Volbella are designed to effectively fill in these fine, delicate lines. However, the more liquid texture of Belotero provides a more smooth and seamless finish.

3) For more volume, increased size and plumpness - opt for the thicker-textured fillers such as Belotero Intense or Juvederm Ultra XC. However, Belotero Intense’s smooth formula offers less risk of bumps and the Tyndall effect.
